FORCED

"When do I feel lonely? Uh, usually in hotels. When there’s thousands of fans chanting out in the street … Chanting because they love you and everything, and you can’t get out, you feel trapped inside. And you just cry, you feel lonely, you know? And there’s all that love out there. But still, you really do feel trapped and lonely that you can’t get out. And if you go to a book store, if you go out, if you go to a club — which I don’t like clubs — you know… every book you buy, they want to know ‘Why are you buying this? Why is Michael Jackson buying this? Why is he reading this?’ or [when] you go to the club, as soon as you go in there, every song is my song — as if I want to hear my music — and everybody starts chanting for me to dance. So it becomes a show all over again. So you can’t go anywhere… I don’t want to complain, like I’m complaining, because it comes with the territory. But I don’t think people understand the other side that comes with it. They’re so quick to call you strange and weird, but it’s almost as if you’re forced to be different. Because it’s not a normal life, you know?"

INNOCENCE

"I'm in love with innocence. That's what I'm in love with."

SIMPLE

Ett utdrag från Michaels dikt "Magical Child".

HURTING

"The fans don't know how much I love them so. It really can get to a hurting feeling inside due to how strong I love them all."

I AM A FATHER MYSELF

"But now I am a father myself, and one day I was thinking about my own children, Prince and Paris and how I wanted them to think of me when they grow up. To be sure, I would like them to remember how I always wanted them with me wherever I went, how I always tried to put them before everything else. But there are also challenges in their lives. Because my kids are stalked by paparazzi, they can’t always go to a park or a movie with me. So what if they grow older and resent me, and how my choices impacted their youth? “Why weren’t we given an average childhood like all the other kids”, they might ask?

And at that moment I pray that my children will give me the benefit of the doubt. That they will say to themselves: “Our daddy did the best he could, given the unique circumstances that he faced. He may not have been perfect, but he was a warm and decent man, who tried to give us all the love in the world.”

I hope that they will always focus on the positive things, on the sacrifices I willingly made for them, and not criticise the things they had to give up, or the errors I’ve made, and will certainly continue to make, in raising them. For we have all been someone’s child, and we know that despite the very best of plans and efforts, mistakes will always occur. That’s just being human.”

SHOW THEM, GIVE THEM

"I pray for peace all the time, and the most important thing I pray for is the protection for children and babies. That's the thing that concerns me the most. I want them to be protected and to have more children's rights in the world, or there is a day for children, a celebration for children. Just show them, give them a little more attention and love"

THEY'RE SMART

"The tabloid press are bastards, and you’ve got to have rhinoceros skin to deal with that kind of ignorance mentality. They do it simply to sell papers, because bad news sell, not good news. They simply make it up. If they don’t have anything, they just make it up. I’m nothing like the way the tabloids have painted me out to be, nothing. Nothing like that. They’re the ones who are crazy. They’re ignorant. I always say to my fans ‘Let’s have a tabloid burning. Let’s make a big mountain out of tabloids and just burn them.’ The real fans who love me know that garbage isn’t true. They know. They’re smart.

A WONDERFUL FEELING

"I love to put my soul into something and have people accept it and like it. That's a wonderful feeling."

THAT SOUNDS KINDA NICE

I was walking around the house and I just started singing, ‘da-da–da-da-da-da-da’, and said, ‘Ah, that sounds kinda nice.’ I kept singing it and gradually it came about. I went into the studio, we have a studio at home, a 24 track studio. Randy and I, I told Randy what to put down, what to play on the piano, and we did some percussion and some clapping and it turned out real funky. I played it for Quincy Jones and he loved it.

BUT I'M THEIR FATHER

"I just want my kids to have a better life than me. I never want them to go through what I had to go through. How would you guys feel if your kids asked you for something and you had to send someone out to get it? I appreciate what you guys do for my kids, but I’m their father. I should be the one doing those things, but I can’t just get in the car and go. There are so many things I can’t do for them because those people out there won’t let me. You have no idea how that feels. You really don’t. I just wanna live my life with my kids."

FUN INSPIRES ME

"Fun inspires me... Out of bliss comes magic, wonderment and creativity."

REMEMBER

"It hurts when you lose someone you love. But people always leave something behind for you to remember them forever."

I AM BEWILDERED

"I am bewildered at the length to which people will go to portray me so negatively."

ASK

"Before you judge me, ask me about my childhood. And I will ask you about yours."

BEAUTY

"A young lady's physical beauty can by no means outshine the inner beauty that radiates from her heart and spirit."

REPLACE

In San Francisco and Los Angeles, it looked like the walls were falling the way hundreds of them came at the stage all together. But we have to practice getting away, too, so we’re ready to drop everything and run. Jermaine dropped his guitar and took off at the end of the Forum concert. We can always get a new guitar for him, but he’d be kinda hard to replace.
—  The Jacksons perform their concert at the Forum, in LA. This concert at the Los Angeles Forum in front of an audience of 18,000. At one point in the show, teenage girls invade the stage forcing the group to run for safety.

THE EXPENSE

"I have always had a soft speaking voice. I haven't cultivated it or chamically altered it: that's me – take it or leave it. Imagine what it must be like to be criticised for something about yourself that is natural and God given. Imagine the hurt of having untruths spread by the press, of having people wonder if you're telling the truth – defending yourself because someone decided it would make good copy and would force you to deny what they said, thus creating another story. I've tried not to answer such ridiculous charges in the past because that dignifies them and the people who make them. Remember, the press is a business: newspapers and magazines are in business to make money – sometimes at the expense of accuracy, fairness and even the truth."

AWARE

When you say Michael Jackson, people always think of an entertainer. They don’t think of the fact that I write songs. I’m not trying to brag, but I write them, and I direct a lot of [the videos]. I don’t think [younger artists] are aware of those things, which I think would be inspiring for them. (2001)
