THE PURITY OF HIS ARTISTREY

Michael Jackson's timeless, multi-generational appeal has to do with the purity of his artistrey. There was just something about this guy. If you cut through all the life [stuff] and just watch what he does, he had a tremendous power. He had a joy, an innocence, a commitment to performance that was really unique. Elvis wasn' that. The Beatles aren't that. It was something different." ~ Nelson George

Visste ni att Off the wall är även Jay-Zs favoritalbum?

Michaels respons: "I've been told over and over that black people on the cover of magazines doesn't sell copies... Just wait. Someday those magazines are going to be begging me for an interview. Maybe I'll give them one, and maybe I won't."

"Michael Jackson wanted to do a musical. I said no to a lot of things. For me, I love the films, I love the books, and there's elements that I love around it... like the theme park. But I only wanted to do it because I knew it would be incredible." ~ J.K. Rowling

"I got a chance to be in the studio with Michael Jackson, and not too many people can say that. But I had, he was in a raw element, he was comfortable, and when Michael was listening to the music – the one thing I learned, 'cuz I just kept watching him was: the dude was beatboxing while he was listening to the music, his body was counting the rhythm like a drummer, his whole complete body! By the time the song was finished he could examine exactely where he was going with the song." ~ Wyclef Jean

WHO CAME UP WITH THOSE THINGS?

The glove, the white socks, the red leather jacket – who came up with those things?

The glove was just – I thought one was cooler than two. I love to accent movement. The eye goes to where the white is – you know, the glove. And the feet, if you're dancing, you can put an exclamination point on your movement if it has a bit light on it. So I wore the white socks. And for the design of the jacket, I would sit with the people who made the clothes and tell them where I wanted a button or a buckle or a design. But I don't wear that look anymore. It's sad to get caught up in the past. That's why I don't put awards in my house. No gold records, No Grammys. They are in storage. I don't like to be puffed up with pride, 'cause I'd feel like I don't have anymore things to reach for. And that's not true. (1999)

MICHAEL JACKSON VS. KANYE WEST

NATE GIORGIO: ARTIST AND FRIEND OF MICHAEL JACKSON

Nate Giorgio is one of today’s most respected, influential and award-winning fine artists. Known for his masterful paintings and stunning portraits, Nate was born in Binghamton, New York, began his professional art career in New York City, and later moved to Los Angeles, California.  In 1984, Nate Giorgio, signed an exclusive contract to be Michael Jackson’s personal artist.  In addition to the private commissions, exhibits and artwork sold around the world, his illustrations appear inside and on the cover of the ‘Michael Jackson Opus‘ and in Michael’s book ‘Dancing the Dream‘, to name just a few.

How did Nate Giorgio originally meet Michael Jackson?

Nate Giorgio: “I read how he loved art so I did a few paintings and sent them off to his office. I was still in NY and one day his assistant called me. She said MJ’s right here dancing around when he saw your art, he wants to meet you. Within a few weeks he flew me out to his home in Encino and we met. We went to see a rough cartoon version of Captain EO! At Disney studios, him and I just sitting there eating popcorn checking out the film. It blew me away and it was still rough, hand drawn segments mixed with live action.”

About the photograph below of Nate Giorgio and Michael Jackson:

Nate Giorgio: “Sam Emerson, Michael Jackson’s Personal photographer, took this picture of me and MJ.  At the time, in 1988, I was MJ’s guest on his BAD tour in Rome.  We were actually at a party in this photo, just hanging out when MJ just asked Sam to get a shot of the two of us together. This party might have been at one of the Embassy’s. I’m not sure.”

The notion of celebrity and Nate Giorgio's take on this phenomenon with Michael Jackson.

DanseTrack:

If a person lives long enough, it is not that unusual–maybe at least once in a while–to encounter someone who is considered famous.  Especially if you live in areas such as New York City or Los Angeles, celebrity sightings can be a relatively common occurrence.  In most of these instances, however, you get the feeling that the person can lead a relatively normal life. Sure, they get double takes and the occasional request for an autograph, but by and large, the person of particular recognition can go out wherever or whenever they please.

With Michael Jackson, however, that was definitely not the case. I think you probably got a glimpse of that when you worked with him. What insight do you have into that aspect of Michael Jackson’s life?

Nate Giorgio:

“Yeah, MJ couldn’t go anywhere without being mobbed. I saw a lot of that from early on at the height right up to the time he passed.  I would see this when I would visit him at the Carolwood home.  At one of my visits to his house, in 2009, there was the usual crowd of fans at the front gate.  When I met with him inside a short while later, I said, “Man, how do you do it?  Day in and day out, you constantly have to deal with people wherever you turn.”

“MJ just looked at me and smiled as though it did not bother him one bit. He had that expression on his face that said that this was something he dealt with because it was a part of him.  From such an early age, he had just gotten so used to it.  MJ felt that the fans truly were an extension of his image.  He thrived on it, and this is one of the reasons he commissioned paintings like the hero pieces I did. These paintings represented the image he wanted to project for the fans, as much as for himself.”

“People always talked about how he was a prisoner, and that he could not go anywhere. Like all serious artists, however, he was mostly just a loner.  MJ did not seem to worry about living a normal life. When an artist creates, that artist steps into his own little world, which is a much stronger place than people think. That world is not fragile, but is instead full of power and creativity.  MJ, I believe, was like this.  It is very difficult to even compare him with any other celebrity.  Because of his unparalleled artistry, MJ viewed his isolation much differently than one would expect.”

“And, at times, he did go out and there were his children, who meant the world to him.  MJ loved studying and discussing art and  frequently met with other creative people he admired.  So fame never kept him from doing what he loved. That’s for sure.”

“This is a photo I took in Italy, in 1988, while looking out the window and down at the tour bus I rode in with MJ while in Rome for his Bad concert tour. Fans would swarm the front and back, so we couldn’t move. I think we were getting ready to go somewhere and I took this quick shot from my room. Such an incredible time…”

"THRILLER" TILLBAKA PÅ BILLBOARD HOT 100!

"Thriller" är på riktigt The Anthem of Halloween – dessutom kommer Michaels musik leva förevigt. "Thriller" är tillbaka på Billboard Hot 100! Helt vansinnigt häftigt.

Just outside the top 10 on the r’n’b chart, Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” re-enters at No. 14, thanks to strong digital sales and streams caused by the Halloween holiday. Now a staple during Halloween celebrations, “Thriller” rose 51% to 35,000 downloads and 82% to 2 million domestic streams. “Thriller” concurrently re-enters the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 42. ~ Billboard Hot 100

FAKTA #36

THEN, NOW, FOREVER

1. Escape (New version/Original)
2. She was lovin' me (New version/Original)
3. Do you know where your children are (New version/Original)
4. Slave to the rhythm (New version/Original)
5. A place with no name (New version/Original)
6. Blue gangsta (New version/Original)
7. I was the loser (New version/Original)
8. Can't get your weight off of me (New version/Original)
9. Chicago (New version/Original)

Exempelvis "Do you know where your children are", "Blue gangsta", "A place with no name", "Slave to the rhythm".

PRINCES TWEETS

WHAT MICHAEL JACKSON DID FOR DANCE

Does any dance move have more global recognition than the moonwalk? If you've seen it or tried it, then it's probably thanks to Michael Jackson. He wasn't the first to master the step: tap-dancer Bill Bailey performed it ("the backslide") in the 1950s, West Coast bodypopping crew the Electric Boogaloos had their own version in the late 1970s, and Jackson himself was taught by Jeffrey Daniel, the smooth mover from 80s pop outfit Shalamar. But it was Jackson who made the moonwalk his own, sharpening it up with a snappier heel and a slicker glide. In this and many other ways, he changed the face of dance.

Watch any footage from his early days with the Jackson 5 and you can see that from a young age he danced as easily as he sang. He could catch a step, spin it around and slot it into a beat just as naturally as if it was a musical riff. The dancing wasn't just an accompaniment to words and music, it was also a key part of the whole performance. As compelling as he was in the group, it was the solo albums Off the Wall and Thriller that especially defined Jackson as a dancer. Take his performance of Billie Jean from the Motown Records broadcast in 1983. Whippet-thin and mixing the fast with the loose, Jackson cut an unforgettable figure. Joints alternately jagged and juicy, he'd flick and retract his limbs like switchblades, or snap out of a tornado spin into a perfectly poised toe-stand. And then he wheeled out the moonwalk. Audiences did a collective double take and surrendered; Jackson ruled.

Jackson's dancing also changed the format of the music video – its style, its story, its production values and its audience. For swagger and attitude, the gang scene in Beat It simply beat its counterpart in West Side Story, from which it drew inspiration. And then, of course, there was Thriller. It wasn't just the horror-film plot and effects – the grizzly zombies busting out of graves were literally groundbreaking – that made this the best-selling music video ever, it was the dancing: taut, perfectly rhythmic and cool. With Bad, he introduced his infamous crotch-grab and in Smooth Criminal he executed the gravity-defying lean. The moves became iconic.

Jackson's influence spreads far and wide. From filmi dance in Bollywood to the sharply choreographed boy bands of the 90s, the patterns of his smooth formation drills have become a part of modern pop culture. Without Jackson, a whole generation of people might not have been involved in dance today: Cuban ballet star Carlos Acosta, British-Bangladeshi whiz-kid choreographer Akram Khan and, er, me.

WHAT SAM SAYS, I DO!

"He preferred the type of lightning like the covers of Bad and Who is it. We were working on a video, I came to the set and told the director: 'I don't know if that lightning will work for him...' And the director said, 'So? That's what it's going to be.' I replied: 'Yes, but Michael would prefer another lightning.' So I went to the dressing room and Michael asked:
'Did you ask for the lightning?'
'Yes.'
'Is it like I asked?'
'No, the answer was he's going to shoot it in his way.'
And he goes: 'Okay, go back and tell the producer I do not mind shooting in his way, but if I don't like it we are not going to use any of this material and will have to re-do it all, and will be a waste of money and time.'
So I went back to the producer, who then told the crew: 'What Sam says, I do!' (laughs)
